He reached out to me this past summer. He explained to me that he only had a few months to live. He tried to be funny about it. Not wanting to bring me into his pain and deep worry. He made light of it through words and with half-hearted jokes. It was important to him that I finish before Christmas and mail it on time. He told me he may never see the finished painting but trusted that I could carry out his wishes. He wanted to surprise his wife. He sent me dozens of photographs of the same view at different times of day. He measured his mantle. I ordered the canvas. He FedEx’d me cash so she couldn’t trace the gift. I started painting this weekend. I planned to send him this brief update today and ask how he was feeling. I learned of his passing.

He will never see the finished painting. It will be for her. For Christmas. From him. 💔

I’ve decided that life as an artist is kind of like being stuck inside of an inescapable escape room. 🤯 🧐

Some people may find that fun and exciting … but for me, it’s a constant head game about how to solve a puzzle. It can drive you mad if you’re not careful. Where do I add another mark? What colors do I mix? How will they play next to each other? If I add this layer will I ruin it? Does it all even matter?

Up until a few weeks ago, I was referring to these

Up until a few weeks ago, I was referring to these botanical paintings as gardenscapes. It recently occurred to me that these are actually escapes from the world through garden imagery. It’s funny how I started painting these during lockdown and the entire time I was actually escaping into a more fanciful and beautiful world through my art. My paintbrush has become a vehicle that allows me to dive into a new reality. Thus, my gardenscapes have become garden-escapes.
