Sewing 🪡 day for this exotic beauty! 🐦

Have you ever heard of the black-and-yellow broadbill bird? Utterly unmistakable in its costume of black, white, yellow, and pink. Wide, deep-based bill, typical of the broadbills, is bright blue. Forages at middle to high levels in lowland and hill forests, frequently moving with mixed-species flocks and sallying out from a perch. Song is disproportionately loud, a series of high-pitched coos that increases in pitch and speed, turning into a maddened series of loud whistles. Frequently gives a jay-like “jeer!” call.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. It is threatened by habitat loss.

I was on 53rd and 5th. I was working as the Market

I was on 53rd and 5th. I was working as the Marketing Director of a law firm and my husband was working on Wall Street. He called me around 8:50am after the first plane hit the north tower. He told me not to worry. He said he planned to evacuate but he was certain it was a pilot error. About 15 minutes went by and news came to us near Central Park that the south tower had just been hit as well. The speculation of an accidental wrong turn was buried.

I called my husband on repeat. No answer. I paced the hallways of the law firm not knowing what to do or where to go. 45 frazzled and hysterical minutes passed and then news came that the pentagon had also been hit. At this point, we knew the country was under attack.

I left the office and immediately began running. I ran towards the towers in the middle of 5th Avenue. The roads were absent of cars and taxis. Only people. They were frantically running in all directions. I kept running. Every so often, I’d stop and huddle with a group of strangers and listen to their radios, it was all unfolding in real time.

The towers collapsed and I kept running. Towards them. Our dog was alone on the 38th floor of 29th street in our apartment and my husband had last called me from the building adjacent to the trade center.

After running 23 blocks, I looked up and saw my husband standing on the corner of 29th street with our Labrador. He was peppered from collapsed building ashes and standing like a solider. I burst into tears.

We weren’t allowed to stay in our apartment that night on the 38th floor, we hunkered down with friends. Weeks passed and it just never felt the same. Sleepless nights. 2am evacuations because of anthrax threats, subways not running on schedule or sudden delays. Fear enveloped me.

I hope you can see through my walls. Sometimes they are forged out of protection or fear, other times from disappointment or anger. I leave windows of light for those that I can really trust and open parts of me to the world when I feel safe. These walls become foundations of faith, deep-rooted friendships and non-judgmental platforms. Glimpses of childhood nostalgia and sweet memories of simpler times when I knew and read less about the world around me. Growth and change, understanding and acceptance. Gratitude and strength.

Working on the most bizarre canvas I’ve ever worked on in my life. It’s basically a canvas framed within a canvas. Swipe 👉🏼 to see how the backside 🍑 was constructed.

It’s been giving me a little trouble (has puzzled me for years and finally taking a stab at it) and I’m trying to work with the geometrics of it but keep as simple yet as intriguing as possible … stay tuned.
